THE BLUE OF DISTANCE
‘The Blue of Distance’ is an attempt to capture the texture of longing. The title references the writing of Rebbeca Solnit in her book ‘The field guide to getting lost’. Solnit describes the perception of blue as the colour of the horizon, remote mountain ranges, and anything far away. This blue space is not a physical dimension we can exist in. Its beauty is that we can only observe from a distance, its creation from the scattering of light.
‘THE COLOUR OF THAT DISTANCE IS THE COLOUR OF AN EMOTION, THE COLOUR OF SOLITUDE AND OF DESIRE, THE COLOUR OF THERE SEEN FROM HERE, THE COLOUR OF WHERE YOU ARE NOT. AND THE COLOUR OF WHERE YOU CAN NEVER GO. FOR THE BLUE IS NOT IN THE PLACE THOSE MILES AWAY AT THE HORIZON, BUT IN THE ATMOSPHERIC DISTANCE BETWEEN YOU AND THE MOUNTAINS.’
